Places to explore on your houseboat holiday

 

The Tweed region has many interesting highlights which will enrich your holiday.   You may choose to have a few nights at the Tweed Marina to explore our local surroundings before heading out on your houseboat holiday to experience the wonders of the Tweed River.  The Tweed River offers over sixty kilometres of river flanked by sub-tropical rainforest, lush cane and dairy farms, guarded by towering Mount Warning and the Macpherson Ranges.

Places to drop anchor on your Houseboat Holiday 

 

 Ukerebagh Island - Just around the corner from Boyds Bay Houseboats base lays the beautiful nature reserve of Ukerebagh Island.  Crystal clear water and white sandy beaches.  A great place for swimming and snorkelling. A popular retreat for the dolphins to come and have a play around your houseboat. You may even catch a Sand Crab on your fishing line.   Up anchor and we now head south (upstream to boaties)

Fingal - On the banks of the Fingal straight lays the magnificent golfing complex of the Coolangatta & Tweed Heads Golf Club.  Boyds Bay Houseboats has a mooring that you can hook onto so you can go and enjoy this fantastic course.  The club offers fine dinning from a la carte to buffet style and live entertainment just sets the mood.  The dolphins love to follow the houseboats along this stretch of the Tweed River.

 Chinderah - Approximate travelling time from the Tweed Marina is 1hr 20m.  Great place to drop anchor for your first night.  Don't feel like cooking, well pop on over and enjoy the food and the local hospitality at the Chinderah Tavern.  The Bistro serves Old style Pub tucker with value meals for kids. A general store is there as well to pick up any extra provisions.  Short stroll down the road is the local seafood outlet for all your fresh or cooked seafood. From this location you will be witness to some of the most beautiful sunsets in the Tweed River.

  Dodd’s Island - Sit back with fishing rod in hand and start reeling in your own fish for the pan.  A great place to jump in your dinghy and put your crab pot out which is supplied with your houseboat. Big fat mud crabs linger in the waters around Dodd’s Island.  There is nothing better than relaxing on your houseboat holiday eating a freshly caught mud crab.

Rainforest of Stott’s Island - This nature reserve of lowland subtropical rainforest covers an area of approximately 160 hectares.  The Rainforest is home to the endangered Mitchell's Rainforest Snail, over 47 bird species like the Whistling Kyte and the White breasted Sea Eagle.  Visitor access is no longer provided but you can adventure around the Island in your tender boat which comes with the houseboat.  Stott’s Island is another great place for mud crabbing, fishing and watching the fantastic bird life.  Lay back in your sun-lounger on the upper deck of your houseboat and take in the surroundings - nature will surely delight you.

 Tumbulgum - A picturesque historic village on the banks of the Tweed River.  A popular spot for our weekend house boaties.  The historic Tumbulgum Tavern was established in 1887 and holds a wonderful collection of old photo's and pubobillia.  Pop on in for a cold beer or a chat with the locals.  It is a real family pub with a choice of indoor and outdoor area's to enjoy the fine food that is served. Take a stroll along the heritage shop fronts and browse for gifts and souvenirs at the local arts and crafts gallery.  Waterskiing is also popular.  The historic cemetery (1887-1947) is also full of pioneer history.

Rous River - Branching off at Tumbulgum is the tranquil Rous River.  A peaceful secluded hideaway.  Great for fishing. Beautiful views of Mt Warning.  Sunsets on the Tweed River are spectacular.

­Murwillumbah - Located nearly exactly in the middle of the Mt Warning caldera.  Mt Warning commands almost every view.  Wonder along the main street of Murwillumbah and view the historic buildings in the art deco style.  There are also many tempting ranges of al fresco cafes and eateries.  Drop anchor out the front of the World Heritage Rainforest and Visitor information centre and access a range of information on the rainforest and the Tweed area.

 Bray Park Weir - You have now reached the end of river system with your houseboat.  A beautiful tranquil part of the Tweed River.  For most of the year, the peak of Mt Warning is where the sun’s first rays touch the Australian mainland.  Make the effort one morning to watch this breathtaking sight.  The Weir is also known for some great fishing.
